Split ends happen when the ends of your hair become brittle, dry, and frayed.

Causes of Split End

The various causes of split ends can be:

  • Exposure of hair to excessive heat, dust, and pollution
  • Over-washing your hair
  • Irregular oiling of hair
  • Excessive use of hair-styling products like straighteners, curlers and chemical products like serums, sprays and dry shampoos
  • Washing your hair with hot water
  • Not getting your hair trimmed regularly
  • Chemical treatments including perming and hair coloring
  • Exposure to hard water including chlorinated swimming pools

Tips and tricks

  • The only way to restore your healthy locks is to get trim. You can preferably visit a salon every 6 weeks to get a trim of at least half inch.
  • Don’t wash your hair daily. It will wash out natural oil from your hair scalp. If your hair scalp is oily, you can wash your hair on alternate days. Don’t forget to use conditioner, even if your hair is oily.
  • Choose shampoos that are sulfates and paraben free. Sulfates can destroy hair follicles and inhibit hair growth. Parabens can cause skin issues such as rosacea and dermatitis.
  • Detangle your hair with a wide tooth comb.
  • Avoid chemical exposures such as hair coloring, perming, and straightening, etc.
  • Avoid excessive use of hair styling products such as blow dryer, curlers, dry shampoos, hair serum, and more.
  • Lack of nutrients in the body can make your hair weak. Add supplements that strengthen the hair, such as biotin and folic acid.

Split ends can impact the look of your hair and if left untreated can cause severe hair damage. Make sure to get proper treatment for split ends to keep your locks healthy and shinier.
